1:00PM: MAKING FRIENDS WITH THE MEDIA WITH GRANT LAWRENCE

In 2009, the media surrounds us at every turn. All of those mediums are at your disposal to publicize and promote your music should you use the media to the correct advantage. In this very informative and positive seminar, Grant Lawrence, a long time musician and CBC Radio 3 music journalist, will share the secrets of making friends with the media, writing a great press release, giving the best interview, and how to use all the latest social networking tools that maximize publicity possibilities. Remember that a great relationship with the media is just as important as a great relationship with the fans.

2:30: BREAK (snacks & drinks provided)

2:45: GET IN THE VAN – TOURING SEMINAR WITH ROB WRIGHT
Moderated by Grant Lawrence

Are you ready for bad food, uncomfortable beds, too little sleep, and payment in beer? Rob Wright discusses the who, what, why, where, when and how of touring for musicians. This in-depth session delivers practical and effective information on routing, budgeting, logistics, and what life looks like from the road. Rob Wright will give the perspective on how to put together your own tour from the grassroots level and what to watch for as the audiences grow.

PAST EVENTS

Comox, BC – June 24th – 28th, 2009 – Vancouver Island Music Business Conference
Kelowna, BC – June 24th, 2009 – Music BC & SOCAN Info session @ The Habitat

Each year eight workshops were run starting in September (January in 2006), covering topics that were relevant to musicians and music industry personnel. Each workshop featured a panel of industry representatives with specialized knowledge in the topic area. The main workshop series has been held in Vancouver at Tom Lee Music Hall (key sponsor), but the series has also branched out to the Lower Mainland and around BC with satellite workshops. These “regional” work-shops have become essential in Music BC’s outreach programs to the music industry outside of Vancouver. In 2007, the In-House workshops were introduced bringing local industry representatives into the Music BC board room for intimate seminars focusing on the introduction to the music business through various topics.

Some topics that have been covered in the past include Music & the Internet, Festival and Tour Planning, Tax Preparation for Musicians, Promotion, Business and Marketing Plans, Licensing, Distribution, Copyright and Placing Music in Film and Television.

Music BC’s Career Development Series has been vital to the BC music scene in order to ensure that musicians, labels, managers, composers and other industry personnel have up to date and relevant knowledge concerning the music industry. Through FACTOR funding, we have been able to reach out to smaller regions of BC in order to share this same vital knowledge.
