Get in the Van! Touring Seminar
Music BC’s Career Development Series
Saturday April 18th, 2009
3rd Floor, Tom Lee Music Hall – 929 Granville St.
1-4pm
Every artist has to get on the road at some point. It’s not always glamorous but thankfully many artists have traveled those roads in the past, and they have many words of wisdom that require far more than a 3 hour time slot will allow. For this seminar, we will be inviting some seasoned touring artists, booking agents, promoters, and venue owners. They’ll go through how to book a tour in a new territory, how to be a professional and respectful artist so the venues will want you back, promoters, horror stories and more.
Moderated by: Grant Lawrence, CBC Radio 3

Panelists:
- Rob Wright – Agent, SL Feldman & Associates
Through his work promoting concerts in Edmonton over the past 10 years, Rob has become well acquainted with the inner workings of Canada’s music industry. Rob has produced over 500 concert events in Edmonton. He held the position of Talent Buyer for New City Likwid Lounge & Suburbs for 5 years, two of Edmonton’s premier club showcase venues. He’s also simultaneously held the positions of Media Promotions / A&R Representative for Stony Plain Records.
Rob also has experience touring across Canada and performing in underground rock acts. This has given Rob a unique perspective on the industry, both as an artist and an industry professional. The knowledge accrued between acting as de facto band manager and booking agent, at the same time working as Promoter for New City, has allowed him to successfully manage artists, book tours, properly negotiate deals and pitch artists to trendsetters throughout the music industry.
- Lara Farcasan – Live Nation
Lara served 4 years at management company Divine Industries working with artists like 54-40, Barney Bentall, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, John Mann, and Ridley Bent coordinating logistics, funding, and touring herself as a musician on the side. Now she works as a talent assistant for Live Nation, in a supporting role for bookings by creating routings, working with agencies, and the development of tours into an overall career plan.
- Vaughn Pease – Tour Manager, David Usher/ State of Shock
Having been a sound engineer for the past fifteen years, Vaughn began touring five years ago with artists like Default, Jets Overhead, and Diana Krall. One thing led to another and he began tour managing as well as mixing, most recently with David Usher and State of Shock, handling all the logistics of day to day life on the road, from making sure everyone gets to the gig on time to keeping track of every dollar the tour makes and spends. Between tours Vaughn is a Production Manager at Rocky Mountain Production Services, taking care of the technical logistics of shows and events throughout Western Canada.

Moderator: Patrick Aldous, Atkins & Co, Drummer, Vice-President of Music BC
Panelists:
Abe Laboriel Jr. – Drummer
Los Angeles-based drummer Abe Laboriel Jr., the son of world renowned bassist Abraham Laboriel Sr., spent most of his youth accompanying his father to recording sessions where he would study and hang-out with many of L.A.’s greatest musicians. After earning a full scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Abe graduated in 1993, returned to L.A. and landed his first major tour with guitar hero Steve Vai. He then went on to tour with Seal, following which Abe spent much of the late ‘90’s recording and touring with k.d. lang. In 2001 Abe was asked to record with Sir Paul McCartney on his “Driving Rain” album. He has been a part of McCartney’s live & recording band ever since. While maintaining his regular gig with McCartney, Abe has also toured extensively with Sting and Eric Clapton. Outside of career as a touring musician Abe has also enjoyed an illustrious recording career, appearing on countless recordings for artists such as Eric Clapton, Les Paul, Alison Krauss, B.B. King, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, Santana, Celine Dion, Jewel, Duran Duran, Pussy Cat Dolls, Jessica & Ashlee Simpson, Miley Cyrus & many others.
Craig Northey
Craig Northey is best known as a founding member of the recently-reformed Canadian rock band The Odds, but he is also a “serial collaborator” with projects involving Jesse Valenzuela of the Gin Blossoms, Rob Baker of the Tragically Hip and his long-time writing partner Colin James. He has also worked extensively in film, stage and television, including acting as the musical director for the comedy troupe, “Kids in the Hall” and writing and performing the opening and closing themes of the hit CTV comedy “Corner Gas”. Incorporating his love of hockey, he was also musical director of (gasp) CBC’s “Hockeyville”. Throughout his career Craig has written, produced and/or played with (amongst others) Warren Zevon, Rosanne Cash, Wide Mouth Mason, Colin James, the Waltons, Jeremy Fisher, Gin Blossoms, Dahmnait Doyle, Paul Hyde, Kim Stockwood and Rex Goudie. He can remember most of it.
Pat Steward
After completing his music studies at a Vancouver Island Music institution Pat Steward burst out of club land obscurity almost twenty-five years ago when he recorded the hit “Summer of ‘69” with Bryan Adams and toured the rocker’s “Reckless” album around the world and back again to his Vancouver home. Since those times with Adams, Pat has made his mark with the musically hip and sonically astute pop-rockers The Odds (who have recently reformed), kicked out barnstorming blues and rock with Aussie singer Jimmy Barnes, shuffled his way from coast to coast across Canada with blues/swing guitarist extraordinaire Colin James, driven the classic soul/R&B-inspired sound behind Vancouver favourites Sharkskin, and provided the groove for the critically and commercially successful solo career of Canadian chart-topper Matthew Good. In addition to all of that, Pat is a first-call session drummer for all of Vancouver’s best producers and has recorded and played live with countless other artists. In short, Pat – who loves playing everything from jazz and reggae to pop and rock– has paid his dues, albeit in the comfortable company of some of the best in the business. During the rare quiet times in his career, Pat helps out a local Vancouver secondary school by teaching drumming to the kids.
