MUSIC BC SUPPORTS MODERNIZING CANADA’S COPYRIGHT LEGISLATION

For Immediate Release

November 8, 2010

VANCOUVER, BC. At their Annual General Meeting on in late October, the members of Music BC endorsed the following two resolutions in support of balanced copyright reform in Canada:

  • Music BC members agree that copyright owners should have clear laws protecting their copyrights and should receive fair compensation for the use of their copyrights.
  • Modernizing the Canadian Copyright Act to deal with digital rights and to bring Canada up to date with other nations in the world including our present treaty obligations is of critical importance to the independent music community.

“British Columbia’s independent musicians want to send a message, in the strongest possible terms, to the Government of Canada: the time has come to make changes to Canada’s outdated system of copyright. The problem we face is one of fairness – fairness for creators who deserve the ability to choose how to share their work with consumers,” said Bob D’Eith, Executive Director of Music BC.

Music BC is British Columbia’s voice for independent Canadian musicians and has been for over 20 years. With over 1000 paid members and over 4000 news subscribers, Music BC represents all sectors of the music business in BC from artists to labels to publishers to studios to producers and all other music business personnel.

“As a musician, I have felt firsthand the effects of widespread file-sharing.  Without a fair marketplace for our work, it doesn’t matter how good our product is or how much time and resources we invest, it is becoming harder and harder to make a living in music. I feel bad for the up and coming artists who will not have the same opportunities that we had earlier in our career. ” said Brad Merritt, from the band 54-40.

Music BC supports the introduction of Bill C-32, The Copyright Modernization Act, and acknowledges that it is intended to address some of the concerns expressed by independent musicians in BC, including the implementation of Canada’s international treaty obligations and modernization of our copyright laws.  While as written it does not fully address the imbalance that has occurred in the marketplace, it is hoped this strong first step is refined in the legislative process and brought swiftly into law.

“I urge our Members of Parliament and Senators from all parties to work collaboratively to implement meaningful, progressive legislative reform that addresses the current inadequacies of the Copyright Act. The longer the delay in implementation of copyright reform, the greater the potential negative impact to independent musicians.” adds Patrick Aldous, President of Music BC and entertainment lawyer.
